A dental crown procedure usually involves several visits to the dentist. During which the tooth is prepared, any damaged areas are removed, and the tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown. An impression of the tooth is then taken and sent to the dental laboratory to make the crown. A temporary crown may be placed on the tooth while the permanent crown is being made. Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is bonded to the tooth.
